Item build
A starting build that works in most games. Swap pieces based on the enemy team; the notes explain what each stage is for.
Checked against 7,165 Warden matches from October 6–7, 2026 (all ranks). It keeps the items most Warden players buy and fills the other slots with the items that won most often. See the item tier list for how we measure that.

| Stage | Items |
|---|---|
| Laning (800-soul items)High-Velocity Rounds and Extended Magazine are the usual start. Sprint Boots and Extra Spirit have the best results of his cheap items. | |
| Mid game core (1,600–3,200)Warden is a gun tank: Opening Rounds, Titanic Magazine, Swift Striker and Quicksilver Reload are on most Wardens. Enduring Speed and Fleetfoot keep you in range. | |
| Late game (6,400)Mercurial Magnum is on most Wardens but has some of the weakest results in our data. Boundless Spirit and Siphon Bullets do much better; Spiritual Overflow is a solid middle option. | |
| SituationalImproved Spirit and Spirit Lifesteal both score well. Bullet Resist Shredder for team fights, Witchmail against spirit damage. |

How to play
Warden is a tanky initiator. Alchemical Flask cripples enemy damage, Binding Word traps targets who don’t move fast enough, Willpower gives him a barrier and speed, and Last Stand turns him into a pulsing, self-healing fortress in the middle of the enemy team.
Laning phase (0–10 min)
- Flask the enemy hero often. It’s on a 12-second cooldown and cuts their weapon damage, which wins trades.
- Your gun is strong. Shoot a lot; Warden has good DPS early.
- Binding Word for kills. Use it when the enemy is low, then keep them close enough that they can’t escape it.
Mid game (10–25 min)
- Go first at objectives. Your health and barrier let you take the hits.
- Use Willpower to chase or escape. The move speed helps both ways.
- Binding Word plus a teammate almost always means a kill.
Late game and team fights (25+ min)
- Last Stand in the middle of their team. Your resistances skyrocket while channelling, and the pulses heal you based on the damage you deal.
- Charge it safely. The 2-second charge is your weak point. T3 makes you Unstoppable while channelling, which removes that weakness.
- Flask their carries to cut their damage while you stand among them.
Combos
- Catch: Binding Word → Alchemical Flask (slow) so they can’t move away in time → shoot while they’re immobilised.
- Dive: Willpower → run into the group → Last Stand.
- Disarm a duelist: Flask (−25% weapon damage, −30% fire rate at T3) → out-trade them with your gun.
Matchups
- Good against: gun-reliant heroes (Flask cuts their damage) and slow heroes who can’t escape Binding Word.
- Hard against: heroes with stuns to interrupt Last Stand, and long-range heroes who kite him.
Pro tips
- Alchemical Flask T1 removes 1 stamina, which can stop an enemy dashing out of Binding Word.
- Binding Word T3 silences the target until they escape or are trapped, so they can’t use an ability to get out.
- Last Stand T3 gives Unstoppable, so you can’t be stopped once it starts.
Lore
Warden is a militant alchemist from a family of warriors who trained for generations to fight an invasion from beyond. Nobody took that legacy seriously until portals actually opened, and now keeping otherworldly entities out of our world is his life's mission.
Frequently asked questions
Is Warden good for beginners?
Yes. Warden is tanky, his abilities are simple, and his gun is strong. He's a great hero for learning how to start and survive fights.
How do you escape Binding Word?
Move far enough away from where you were standing when it was cast before the timer ends. Dash or dash-jump immediately. If you stay close, you're damaged and immobilised.
How do you counter Warden's Last Stand?
Interrupt it during its 2-second charge with a stun or silence, or simply move out of range. His resistances are very high while channelling, so attacking him isn't always the answer.
