Your first heroes should let you learn the game, not just the hero. The best beginner heroes are forgiving (lots of health, healing or range), have simple abilities, and are useful even when your aim isn’t perfect yet.
These seven heroes are rated Easy in our guides. As a bonus, most of them are also winning more games than average right now (see the tier list).
The 7 best beginner heroes
| Hero | Role | Why they’re good for beginners |
|---|---|---|
| Mo & Krill | Tank | The most health in the game, a self-heal on a short cooldown, and an easy burrow engage |
| Abrams | Tank / brawler | High health, passive regeneration, and simple close-range abilities |
| Warden | Tank / initiator | Tanky, a strong gun, and Last Stand makes him very hard to kill |
| Seven | Spirit carry | Easy-to-land lightning, great wave clear, and a simple but powerful ultimate |
| McGinnis | Support | Turrets deal damage for you; fights from a safe distance |
| Kelvin | Support | Tanky support with heals, slows and a team-saving dome |
| Paige | Support | Plot Armor is simple and powerful; her ultimate works from anywhere on the map |
Pick by what you want to learn
“I want to survive while I learn”: Mo & Krill, Abrams or Warden
Tanks forgive mistakes. You’ll learn the map, objectives and fights without dying every time you’re caught out. Mo & Krill has 930 health, more than anyone in the game, and Abrams regenerates part of all the damage he takes.
“I want to deal damage”: Seven
Seven’s Lightning Ball and Static Charge are easy to land, he clears trooper waves quickly (great for learning to farm), and Storm Cloud can win fights by itself.
“I’m not confident in my aim yet”: McGinnis or Paige
McGinnis’s turrets shoot for you, and Paige’s best tools (barriers and a map-wide ultimate) don’t need aim at all.
“I want to help my team”: Kelvin or Paige
Supports teach you positioning and team fighting, which are the skills that matter most as you improve.
Tips for every beginner hero
- Play one hero for at least 10 matches. See our first 10 matches roadmap.
- Follow the guide’s ability order and build until you understand why they work.
- Unlock your ultimate at 3,800 souls. It’s the most commonly forgotten unlock.
- Stay near your team from the mid game on.
Heroes to save for later
These heroes are rated Hard because of tricky timing, health costs, or high-risk playstyles:
- Lady Geist: abilities cost her own health.
- Apollo: perfect-timing lunges and parry-style deflects.
- Calico, Pocket and Yamato: fragile assassins that need precise combos.
- Lash: dives from above that are easy to get wrong.
- Mina: the lowest health in the game.
- Paradox, Sinclair and The Doorman: complex, setup-heavy kits.
- Silver: two forms to learn.
Once you know the map and the shop, any of these can be very rewarding.
