A landed parry is one of the biggest swings in a Deadlock fight: the attacker is stunned for 2.75 seconds and takes 25% more damage from everyone. A missed parry leaves you on a 4.5 second cooldown while a melee hero swings freely. This page is about landing the first and avoiding the second.
If you’re new to melee, start with melee and parry basics.
The exact numbers
| Value | |
|---|---|
| Parry key | F |
| Animation length | 1 second (ends early if you parry something) |
| Active window | First 0.75 seconds |
| Stun on the attacker | 2.75 seconds, not reduced by debuff resist |
| Damage amp on the attacker | +25% from all sources for the stun |
| After a successful parry | 0.3 seconds where you can’t act, then anything goes, including another parry |
| Cooldown after a miss | 4.5 seconds |
| Heavy melee wind-up you’re reacting to | 0.36 seconds |
What you can parry
- Hero melee, light and heavy. This is the point of parry.
- Viscous’ Puddle Punch, the one common ability that can be parried.
- Trooper and Guardian melee. It blocks the damage, but trooper parries don’t end your parry early or reset it, and since the September 29, 2026 update, parrying objectives no longer resets your cooldown.
You can’t parry bullets, Walkers or almost any ability, unless you’re carrying Counterspell.
Holding parry
Holding the parry key keeps catching melee for the whole window, so one parry can stun two divers who swing at you together.
What beats a parry
Unstoppable and similar effects stop the stun. If a melee carry has popped Unstoppable, save your parry; it won’t stun them.
Rule one: parry heavies, not lights
A light melee comes out instantly. Nobody parries a light on reaction; they parry it by guessing in advance. A heavy melee has a 0.36 second wind-up with a clear animation and sound, then a lunge you can see coming.
So the default is simple: react to heavies, ignore lights. Taking one light melee hit is cheap. Whiffing a parry costs you 4.5 seconds of being open to every heavy the enemy has.
Playing the attacker
Your goal is to make them parry thin air, then punish the 4.5 second gap.
- Walk in and wait. Step into melee range as if you’re about to swing, then don’t. Nervous players parry the threat, not the punch. Once their parry animation finishes, start your heavy.
- Delay your heavy. The parry window is 0.75 seconds. If they parry early, a heavy that lands after the window closes is free.
- Cancel the bait. Start a heavy, watch them parry, then cancel the punch with an item or ability. Their parry is now on cooldown, and yours isn’t.
- Extend the punch. During a true cancel, keep holding melee for the punch extension. It looks like the punch is ending just as the second hit arrives.
- Hide the wind-up. If your hero has a hidden melee, the body animation is covered and the enemy has only the sound to go on.
- Swing at people who can’t parry. Anyone stunned, mid-cast, looking the other way, or mantling a ledge. A melee hit on someone mantling also slows them by 80%.
- Light melee to finish. On a low-health target, a light melee is instant and close to unparryable.
Playing the defender
- Wait for the wind-up. Parry when the heavy starts, not when the enemy walks up. Hovering in front of you is not an attack.
- Listen. The heavy melee swing has a distinct sound, and the glow around the fist is still visible during hidden melees. Play with sound on.
- Know who can hide it. Check the enemy team against the hidden melee list. Against a Viscous, Seven or Yamato, expect punches to come out of ability animations.
- Don’t parry the first fake. If someone walks in and stops, keep shooting. Make them commit.
- After a landed parry, burst. The stunned enemy takes 25% more damage from your whole team for 2.75 seconds. Ping it, then dump everything you have into them. Parry by itself does no damage.
- After a whiff, leave. You have 4.5 seconds with no answer to a heavy melee. Back off, dash, or put something between you and the brawler.
Items that change parry
| Item | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Rebuttal (800, Vitality) | Parry cooldown drops from 4.5 to 2.75 seconds. A successful parry heals you for 100% of the damage you blocked and gives +30% damage for 6 seconds. Also +18% melee resist and +75 health. |
| Counterspell (3,200, Vitality) | For 0.8 seconds, your parry also blocks enemy abilities and items. A successful spell parry heals 150 and gives spirit power and move speed for 6 seconds. 23 second cooldown. |
| Unstoppable (6,400, Vitality) | Makes you immune to the parry stun while active. It can also cancel your heavy melee. |
| Melee Charge (1,600, Weapon) | 50% longer heavy melee lunge. A longer lunge reaches people who thought they were out of range. |
Rebuttal is the pick for anyone who lives in melee range or keeps getting dived by brawlers. Counterspell shines against one big, telegraphed ability you can see coming, if your timing is good.
Common mistakes
- Parrying on reflex. Most whiffs come from parrying movement, not attacks.
- Parrying lights. You’re guessing, and a wrong guess is expensive.
- Landing a parry and walking away. Parry is a setup, not damage. Follow up.
- Swinging a heavy at a full-health enemy who’s looking at you. That’s the easiest parry in the game.
- Forgetting Unstoppable. Check the enemy’s items before you commit to a parry duel.
Practise it
The Sandbox gym has a dummy that throws melee at you so you can learn the timing, and the Atrium in the Hideout has static bots to practise on. Our practice drills include a parry routine you can run in five minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the parry window in Deadlock?
The parry animation lasts 1 second, and it catches melee attacks during the first 0.75 seconds. A successful parry ends the animation early.
Should I parry light or heavy melee?
Heavy. A heavy melee has a 0.36 second wind-up you can see and hear, so you can react to it. Light melee is instant, so parrying one means guessing ahead of time, and a wrong guess puts your parry on a 4.5 second cooldown.
Can Unstoppable stop a parry?
Yes. Unstoppable and similar effects stop the 2.75 second parry stun from landing, so don't count on a parry stun against someone who has it active.
What does Counterspell do to parry?
Counterspell lets a parry block enemy abilities and items as well as melee, for 0.8 seconds. A successful spell parry heals you and gives you spirit power and move speed for a short time. It has a 23 second cooldown.
